Walk Abu Dhabi along the Corniche

Abu Dhabi is built for cars, but its long Corniche and a few walkable districts make good ground on foot in the cooler months. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the waterfront is the place to begin.

The Corniche

The Corniche runs for around eight kilometres along the northern shore of the island, with separate paths for walking and cycling, beaches, parks and views of the towers. It is the main walking route in the city.

Inland, Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest stone building in the city, sits in a cultural district with a modern arts centre.

Mosque, mangroves and museum

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, of white marble with dozens of domes, is open to visitors at set times with modest dress. Its courtyards and colonnades are a long walk in themselves.

The Eastern Mangroves have a boardwalk through the mangrove forest. On Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi sits under a huge perforated dome on the water.

Heat

From May to September, walking outdoors in the middle of the day is dangerous. Walk in the early morning or evening, and save long walks for winter, when the weather is ideal.

The city is spread out, so the map grows in separate patches: the Corniche, the mosque, the mangroves, Saadiyat.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Abu Dhabi clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
