Walk Almaty toward the mountains
Almaty is a leafy city laid out on a grid that slopes gently up toward snowy mountains. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the regular streets fill in tidy blocks, always with the peaks ahead.
A green grid
Almaty's centre is a grid of streets lined with tall trees and irrigation channels, sloping upward to the south toward the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. You can always tell which way is uphill.
Panfilov Park holds the Ascension Cathedral, a colourful wooden building said to have been built without nails. The Green Bazaar, nearby, sells dried fruits, spices and much more. Zhibek Zholy is a pedestrian street.
Up toward the peaks
Kok-Tobe, a hill on the city's edge, has a cable car and walking paths to a viewpoint. Beyond the city, the Medeu skating rink and the Shymbulak ski area are in the mountains, with hiking trails.
A day: the Green Bazaar, Panfilov Park, the pedestrian streets, and up Kok-Tobe at sunset.
Coverage
The grid fills cleanly. The slope is gentle but constant, so walks south are uphill.
Winters are cold with snow, summers warm. Spring and autumn are best for walking.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Almaty, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
