FOG
Wooden wharf, seven mountains

Walk Bergen between the mountains

Bergen sits on a harbour surrounded by mountains, with a wooden Hanseatic wharf and steep lanes of white houses. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the mountain trails above town are as easy to reach as the streets.

Harbour and Bryggen

Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf, is a row of wooden buildings along the harbour, a World Heritage site. Behind the facades, narrow passages lead between leaning wooden houses. The Fish Market sits at the head of the harbour.

The streets climb steeply from the harbour, with neighbourhoods such as Skansen and Marken full of white wooden houses and narrow lanes.

Up the mountains

Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains. The Floibanen funicular climbs Mount Floyen from the centre, but you can also walk up by a winding path, and from the top trails lead to lakes and further peaks. Ulriken, the highest, has a cable car and a ridge walk to Floyen.

The Nordnes peninsula, west of the centre, has a park at its tip with views over the fjord. A good day: Bryggen, the Fish Market, Nordnes, then up Floyen on foot.

Rain

Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe, so bring waterproofs. The paths are steep and slippery when wet.

The centre is compact and fills quickly; the mountain trails add long, winding lines above it.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.

There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
