Walk Charlotte from Uptown to South End
Charlotte is a car city with a compact walkable core and a growing set of trails. FOG hides the map until you walk it, which is a good way to find out how much of the place is genuinely walkable.
Four wards and a crossroads
Uptown grew around the crossing of Trade and Tryon streets, and it is still divided into four wards. The tower blocks are around the crossroads; Fourth Ward, to the north west, keeps a pocket of Victorian houses and small parks. Romare Bearden Park and the stadium sit at the south west edge.
South of Uptown, South End has grown up along the light rail with breweries and apartments, and Dilworth has tree lined streets of older bungalows. NoDa, to the north east, is the arts district.
Trails that join the pieces
The Rail Trail runs beside the light rail from Uptown through South End, an easy, straight walk of a couple of miles. Little Sugar Creek Greenway runs south east from Uptown past Freedom Park, and it keeps getting longer.
A good half day: walk the four wards of Uptown street by street, take the Rail Trail to South End, cut across Dilworth, and return along Little Sugar Creek. The map shows a dense block with two tails.
What the percentage will say
Charlotte is spread out and most of it was built for cars, so the city percentage will stay modest. That is honest information rather than a failure. The greenways are the way to push further on foot.
Summers are hot and humid; the shoulder seasons are long and pleasant. The terrain is gently rolling.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Charlotte clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
