Walk Colombo from Galle Face to Pettah

Colombo is a busy port city with a seafront promenade, a colonial fort district and crowded bazaars. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, and the seafront makes a clean first line.

Seafront and Fort

Galle Face Green is a long seafront lawn where families gather in the evening to fly kites and eat street food. North of it, the Fort district holds colonial buildings, the old Dutch Hospital, now shops and restaurants, and the harbour.

Further north, Pettah is a maze of crowded market streets, each specialising in different goods, with the red and white Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque.

Lake and temples

Beira Lake sits inland from the Fort, with the Seema Malaka temple on a platform in the water, designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The Gangaramaya Temple is nearby. Viharamahadevi Park and the white town hall lie to the south.

The Lotus Tower, one of the tallest structures in South Asia, rises over the city. A day: Galle Face, the Fort, Pettah, Beira Lake and the park.

Coverage

Colombo is flat and hot, with heavy traffic. The seafront and lake paths are the most pleasant routes.

It is warm all year, with two monsoon seasons. Walk early or late in the day.
