Walk Gdansk along the Royal Way
Gdansk was a great Hanseatic port, and its rebuilt Main Town is a row of tall, narrow facades along a river. FOG starts the map hidden and clears only where you walk, and the riverside makes a clean first line.
The Main Town
The Royal Way runs through the Main Town, along Long Lane and the Long Market, past the Neptune Fountain and the town hall to the Green Gate on the river. The houses are tall and narrow, with decorated gables, almost all rebuilt after the war.
Mariacka Street, with its stone terraces in front of the houses, is lined with amber shops and leads to St Mary's Basilica, one of the largest brick churches in the world.
The river and the shipyard
The Motlawa riverside is lined with old granaries and the medieval crane, a large wooden structure once used to load ships. Granary Island, across the water, has been rebuilt with new buildings and paths.
North of the centre, the old shipyard is where the Solidarity movement began, marked by the European Solidarity Centre. A longer walk or a boat ride goes to Westerplatte, where the Second World War began.
Coverage
The Main Town is compact and flat, and it fills fast. The riverside paths frame it on the east.
Summers are mild and busy; winters cold and windy off the Baltic.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Gdansk is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
