Walk Indianapolis from Monument Circle
Indianapolis is flat and gridded, and it built one of the best urban walking trails in the country right through its downtown. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and that trail makes an easy frame to fill.
A planned city around a circle
The city was laid out with Monument Circle at the centre, where the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument rises, and four diagonal avenues cutting across the grid. Massachusetts Avenue, Mass Ave for short, runs north east as a lively street of restaurants and theatres.
West of downtown, White River State Park holds museums and lawns along the river, and the Central Canal runs through it with a walkway on both banks.
The Cultural Trail
The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is a broad, landscaped path of around eight miles that links the downtown districts: Mass Ave, Fountain Square, Indiana Avenue, the Wholesale District and the Canal. Walk all of it and you have a framework across the centre.
The Canal Walk adds a loop of roughly three miles, and the Monon Trail heads north for many miles toward Broad Ripple and beyond. Lockerbie Square, just off Mass Ave, has cobbled streets and nineteenth century cottages.
Coverage
Flat ground and straight streets make the centre fill quickly and cleanly. Beyond it the city is large and spread out, so the trails are the best way to push outward on foot.
Summers are warm and humid, winters cold. Race season in May brings huge crowds to the speedway west of the centre.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Indianapolis, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose miles in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
