Walk Jaipur's Pink City

Jaipur's old city was planned on a grid in the eighteenth century and painted pink, and its bazaars fill every street. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the regular grid fills in very satisfying blocks.

A planned old city

Jaipur was founded in 1727 and laid out on a grid of wide streets and blocks, surrounded by walls with gates. Its buildings were painted a terracotta pink, which gives the Pink City its name.

The Hawa Mahal, a palace facade of hundreds of small windows, looks over one of the main streets. The City Palace and Jantar Mantar, an observatory of giant stone instruments, sit together in the centre.

Bazaars

Each section of the old city has its bazaars: Johari Bazaar for jewellery, Bapu Bazaar for textiles and shoes, and many more. Walking them is the way to see the city.

Outside the walls, the Albert Hall museum stands in a park, and the Nahargarh fort sits on the hills above the city, with a path up for the view. Amber Fort is a drive north.

The old city's grid fills quickly in tidy blocks. Traffic is intense, so take care on the main roads.

Summers are extremely hot. The best time to walk is from October to March.

The character who walks with you
