FOG
Fountains, jazz and a streetcar spine

Walk Kansas City from the River Market to the Plaza

Kansas City strings its walkable districts along one long north to south line. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, so following that line draws a spine you can branch off from.

A city along a line

The free streetcar runs along Main Street from the River Market near the Missouri River, through downtown and the Crossroads arts district, to Union Station. Beyond that, the National WWI Museum and its Liberty Memorial tower stand on the hill opposite the station, and Main continues south through Midtown to Westport and the Country Club Plaza.

Kansas City calls itself the City of Fountains, and the Plaza, a 1920s shopping district in Spanish style, is full of them. Nearby are the Nelson-Atkins Museum and its lawn with the giant shuttlecocks.

Walking the line

Walk the whole thing, River Market to the Plaza, and you cover around five miles of the city in a straight bright stroke. Branch east at 18th and Vine, the historic jazz district with the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, and spend time in the Crossroads warehouses.

Brush Creek runs past the Plaza with a trail along its banks, which makes a good return loop. Downtown, the Power and Light district and the Library District fill in a dense pocket of streets in an hour or two.

What to expect

The hills are real. The bluffs above the river and the climb up to the Liberty Memorial will be felt. Summers are hot and humid; spring and autumn are the best times for long walks.

Away from the Main Street corridor the city spreads out in both states, so the map fills as a line with patches. That is still a good first month: one long spine and three or four districts done properly.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Kansas City is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.

Is the Kansas City streetcar free?
