Lahore has two street patterns and both are stubborn

The Walled City and everything after it
Old Lahore, Androon Shehr, is a genuine medieval tangle. It was ringed by a wall with thirteen gates, and the surviving names still organise the place: Delhi Gate, Bhati Gate, Lohari Gate, Kashmiri Gate. Inside, the streets are galis, narrow enough that two motorbikes negotiate, doubling back, dead ending, opening suddenly into a chowk like the one in front of the Wazir Khan Mosque with its tiled facade. There is no logic you can hold in your head. You just walk.
North of it sits the Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque with Hazuri Bagh in between, and that is the one place in old Lahore with real open space.
South and east, the city changes completely. The Mall, formally Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam, is a long colonial-era boulevard running past the Museum, Government College and the old university. Beyond it, Gulberg with Liberty Market and MM Alam Road, then DHA, then Model Town, which is a circular planned suburb with radial roads and a park in the middle. Wide, green, car-scaled and slow to cover on foot. The Lahore Canal runs diagonally through the whole thing with a strip of green either side.
The walk to do first
Enter at Delhi Gate and follow the restored Shahi Guzargah, the Royal Trail, west toward the Fort. On paper it is around a kilometre and a half. In practice it takes hours, because the route passes through the Wazir Khan chowk, the hammam, the shoe and spice bazaars, and the lanes off it that pull you sideways.
Come out at Hazuri Bagh, walk the perimeter of the Fort and the mosque, then drop south into Anarkali Bazaar and out onto The Mall. Walk The Mall east past the Museum toward Charing Cross. That single day gives you the densest and the widest street types Lahore has, back to back.
If you want distance rather than density, the canal is your route. It runs for kilometres with a walkable green strip, it is dead straight in stretches, and it links parts of the city you would otherwise never cross on foot.
Why the fog is slow to lift
The Walled City looks small on the map and it is, but it will take you longer than anywhere else in Lahore per square kilometre. The lanes are so dense and so short that a full day of walking clears a patch you could cover with a thumb. It is the most rewarding walking in the city and the least efficient.
It is also the worst place for accuracy. Narrow brick lanes with tall walls on both sides block sky in every direction, so your track will wander through the galis rather than trace them. Expect a fuzzy blot instead of a neat maze.
The new city is the reverse. Gulberg and DHA are easy underfoot and cover ground fast, but the blocks are enormous, so a long walk still comes out as a thin line. Lahore is a very big city and the percentage will move slowly either way.
The walking season is real and short
This matters more here than in most cities. May and June are extreme, regularly over forty degrees, and daytime walking is not sensible. July and August bring the monsoon, which cools things and floods things. November through January brings dense smog that settles over the Punjab and makes long outdoor walking a genuinely bad idea on the worst days.
That leaves late February and March, and October into early November, as the good windows. Locals know this and the parks fill up accordingly. Early mornings extend the season at both ends.

Why is my track messy inside the Walled City?
The galis are narrow with high walls, which blocks most of the sky. GPS drifts in those conditions, so a dense old core tends to reveal as a blot rather than clean lines.
When is the best time of year to walk Lahore?
Late February to March and October to early November. Summer heat and winter smog both cut the season short at the other end.
Which route clears the most ground quickly?
The canal. It is long, straight and continuous, so it moves your covered area faster than the old city ever will.
