Walk Leeds through its arcades
Leeds is a big Yorkshire city with Victorian shopping arcades, an indoor market and a river and canal running through the centre. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the compact centre is a good first map.
Arcades and market
The Victoria Quarter is a set of Victorian arcades with mosaic floors and a stained glass roof over a street. Kirkgate Market, one of the largest covered markets in Europe, is where Marks and Spencer began as a market stall.
Briggate is the main shopping street. The Corn Exchange, a round Victorian building with a domed roof, is a few minutes away, near the old Calls district.
Water and the university
The River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal meet in the centre. Granary Wharf, by the station, and the Calls have paths along the water. The towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs west toward Kirkstall Abbey, a big ruined abbey a few kilometres out.
Leeds Town Hall and the Civic Hall are north of the centre, with the University of Leeds and its Parkinson Building beyond them. Hyde Park, a big green, lies past the campus.
Coverage
The centre is compact and hilly in places. The weather is often grey, and the canal is pleasant in any season.
A day covers the centre and the waterfront. The canal path to Kirkstall is a good long walk.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Leeds clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
