FOG
Docks, cathedrals and the Mersey

Walk Liverpool along the Mersey

Liverpool has a monumental waterfront, two cathedrals linked by a single street and a centre compact enough to cross in half an hour. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, so the river edge is the first bright line you draw.

The waterfront

The Pier Head is lined with the Three Graces, the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. Next to it, the Royal Albert Dock is a set of huge brick and cast iron warehouses now holding museums, galleries and restaurants.

A waterfront promenade runs south along the Mersey for kilometres, past the old docks and on toward Otterspool, a flat, open walk with the river on one side.

Up through the centre

From the docks, walk up through the Ropewalks and the Cavern Quarter around Mathew Street to the shopping streets. Then climb to Hope Street, which links the Anglican Cathedral, one of the largest in the world, with the circular Metropolitan Cathedral at the other end.

Around Hope Street, the Georgian Quarter has terraces of brick houses with coloured doors. The Baltic Triangle, south of the centre, has warehouses turned into studios and food halls. Sefton Park makes a fine loop further south.

Coverage

The centre is compact and fills quickly. The waterfront gives you a long, straight bright edge, and the walk up to the cathedrals adds height and a grid to it.

The weather is mild and often damp. The rise from the river to Hope Street is noticeable but not steep.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.

There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
