Walk Melaka's old town
Melaka was a great trading port ruled in turn by a sultanate, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, and its old town shows all of them. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the old town is compact enough to finish.
The Dutch square
The Dutch Square, called the Red Square, is surrounded by red painted buildings from the Dutch period, including the Stadthuys and Christ Church. A clock tower stands in the middle.
St Paul's Hill rises behind it, with the ruins of a Portuguese church at the top. At its foot, the Porta de Santiago is the last remaining gate of the Portuguese fort, A Famosa.
Chinatown and the river
Across the Melaka River, Jonker Street runs through Chinatown, with shophouses, antique shops and a night market at weekends. Heeren Street and the lanes around it have the old Peranakan townhouses, and the Cheng Hoon Teng temple is one of the oldest in Malaysia.
The river walk follows the Melaka River through the town, with murals and cafes along the banks.

Melaka is hot and humid all year. Walk in the early morning or the evening.
