Walk Milwaukee along the river and the lake

Milwaukee has two long walking lines, the RiverWalk through downtown and the Lake Michigan shore. FOG hides the map until you walk it, so those two lines become the frame you fill in.

River, ward and lake

The Milwaukee River runs through downtown, and the RiverWalk follows it for around three miles, from the Historic Third Ward north past the theatre district toward Brady Street and Beerline. The Third Ward is old warehouse blocks turned into galleries, shops and the Milwaukee Public Market.

To the east, the lakefront is a long ribbon of parks. The Milwaukee Art Museum sits on the water with its winged pavilion, and the path continues north past Veterans Park and Bradford Beach.

A loop that makes a frame

Start at the Public Market, walk the RiverWalk north through downtown (say hello to the Bronze Fonz), and continue to Brady Street. Cross east to the lake and walk south along the shore to the art museum, then back west into the Third Ward. It is a closed loop of several miles that frames downtown neatly.

The Oak Leaf Trail runs a very long way around the county if you want distance. Bay View, to the south, and the East Side neighbourhoods are good for grid walking.

Seasons and coverage

Winters are cold and windy off the lake, but the RiverWalk is cleared and the city keeps walking. Summer is the best season, with festivals along the lakefront.

Downtown and the Third Ward are compact and fill quickly. The surrounding neighbourhoods are a regular grid, so the map lifts in tidy blocks as you push outward.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Milwaukee walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
