Walk Monterey along the bay
Monterey is an old Californian capital on a bay full of sea life, with a waterfront path from the wharf to Pacific Grove. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the coast path draws one long line along the shore.
Wharf to Cannery Row
Fisherman's Wharf is the old pier at the centre of the bay, with sea lions and restaurants. From there, the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, a paved path on an old rail line, runs along the shore to Cannery Row, the street of old sardine canneries made famous by John Steinbeck.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium sits at the end of Cannery Row, in a former cannery. The path goes on into Pacific Grove, along a rocky shore to Lovers Point.
Old Monterey
Monterey was the capital of Alta California under Spain and Mexico. Monterey State Historic Park preserves adobe houses and the Custom House, near the wharf, and a Path of History marked in the pavement leads through them.
Alvarado Street is the main street downtown. The Presidio and the Royal Presidio Chapel are a short walk away.
Fog
Monterey often has fog in summer mornings, which usually clears by afternoon. Autumn is often the sunniest season.
The coast path from the wharf to Lovers Point and back is a long but easy walk. Carmel by the Sea is a few miles south for another day.
What the app adds to a walk
The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.
Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Monterey walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
