FOG
Nine squares, Yale and pizza

Walk New Haven from the Green

New Haven was planned in 1638 as nine squares, and the middle one, the Green, is still there. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the old plan makes a neat start to a much larger map.

The Green and Yale

The New Haven Green is the central square of the original nine square plan, with three churches standing on it. Around it, the old plan forms the downtown, and Yale University fills much of the blocks to the north and west.

Walk through Old Campus, past Harkness Tower and the Gothic residential colleges, to the Beinecke Library, whose walls are made of thin marble that lets light through. The Yale art galleries on Chapel Street are free.

Neighbourhoods

Wooster Square, east of downtown, is the old Italian neighbourhood, with a park of cherry trees that flower in April and the pizzerias on Wooster Street that made New Haven pizza famous.

East Rock Park rises to the northeast, a red cliff with a monument on top and views over the city and the harbour. Walking up from the Orange Street area and back is a solid loop. Science Hill and the neighbourhood of Prospect Hill lie to the north of campus.

Coverage and seasons

The nine squares are compact, and a few days will clear the centre. Winters are cold and wet, autumn is the best walking season, and spring in Wooster Square is short and spectacular.

New Haven is on the train line between New York and Boston, so it is easy to add as a day to a bigger trip.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in New Haven is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
