Walk Palermo through its markets
Palermo is a dense, layered city of Arab, Norman and baroque buildings, with street markets that have run for centuries. FOG starts the map hidden and clears only where you walk, and its alleys are worth every dark patch.
The four quarters
Two main streets, Via Maqueda and the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, cross at the Quattro Canti, a baroque crossroads with curved facades on each corner. They divide the old city into four quarters, each a maze of alleys and small squares.
West along the Corso are the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Normanni, with the gold mosaics of the Palatine Chapel. Via Maqueda is largely pedestrian and leads north to the Teatro Massimo.
Markets and the sea
Palermo's markets are among the most famous in Italy: Ballaro, Il Capo and the Vucciria, each a crowded tangle of stalls and street food. Walking through them is the best way to see the city.
East, the Kalsa quarter leads to the Foro Italico, a seafront park. Monte Pellegrino rises over the city to the north, with a path up to a sanctuary. A good day covers the four quarters, two markets and the seafront.
Coverage
The old city is dense and irregular, so it lights up slowly, alley by alley. Summers are very hot, so walk in the morning and evening.
Traffic is heavy and pavements are narrow in places. Take care crossing the main roads.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Palermo clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
