Walk Poznan from the Stary Rynek
Poznan is a lively city in western Poland with a colourful old market square, a cathedral island where the Polish state began and a big lake for long walks. FOG starts the map dark and lights only where you walk.
The old market
The Stary Rynek is the main square, ringed by colourful merchant houses and centred on the Renaissance town hall. At noon, two mechanical goats butt heads above the clock, drawing a crowd every day.
Around the square, the old town has churches, museums and narrow streets. The Imperial Castle, built for the German emperor, stands in the newer centre to the west.
Island and parks
East of the old town, across the Warta, Ostrow Tumski is the cathedral island, considered the cradle of the Polish state, with the cathedral and riverside paths. North of the centre, the Cytadela park is a large green space on the site of a former fortress.
East of the river, Lake Malta has a path around its shore, popular with runners and walkers, and adds a big loop to the map. Stary Browar, a former brewery, is now a shopping and arts centre.
Flat and spread out
Poznan is flat, and the centre is compact. The wider city takes time, but trams help.
Winters are cold, summers warm. A day loop: the Stary Rynek and the old town, east across the Warta to Ostrow Tumski, on to Lake Malta and around it, then back past the Cytadela park in the north.
