FOG
Jellybean rows and Signal Hill

Walk St. John's up to Signal Hill

St. John's, Newfoundland, is one of the oldest cities in North America, with rows of brightly painted houses climbing steeply from the harbour. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and every street here climbs.

Downtown

Water Street runs along the harbour and is often called one of the oldest streets in North America. George Street, just above it, is a short street of pubs and music. The streets above climb steeply, lined with the painted wooden row houses known as jellybean rows.

The Basilica of St. John the Baptist and the Rooms, a museum and gallery with views over the city, sit on the hill above downtown.

Signal Hill

Signal Hill rises above the entrance to the harbour, with Cabot Tower at the top, where Marconi received the first transatlantic radio signal in 1901. The North Head Trail runs from the Battery, a small fishing village on the cliffs below, around the headland to the top.

The Battery is a cluster of houses clinging to the rocks at the harbour mouth. Walking from downtown along the Battery road and up the trail, then down Signal Hill Road, makes a loop of a few kilometres.

Wind and fog

St. John's is windy, foggy and often wet, with a short summer. Dress for changing weather. Icebergs drift past in spring and early summer.

The streets are steep and short, and the map fills slowly but distinctively. Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America, is a short drive south.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in St. John's clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
