Walk Uppsala along the Fyris
Uppsala is an old university city north of Stockholm, with a huge cathedral, a pink castle and royal burial mounds just outside town. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the river walk is the backbone of the map.
The centre
Uppsala Cathedral is the tallest church in Scandinavia, with twin spires above the city. Nearby, the Gustavianum, the old university building, has an anatomical theatre under its dome, and the Carolina Rediviva library is up the hill.
Uppsala Castle, a long pink building, stands on a ridge above the centre, next to the Botanical Garden. The Linnaeus Garden, once kept by the botanist Carl Linnaeus, is in the centre.
River and north
The Fyris river runs through the city, with paths and cafes along its banks. Walking the length of it through the centre is a good backbone for the map. The student nations, the old student clubs, have houses around the centre.
Gamla Uppsala, a few kilometres north, has large royal burial mounds from the Iron Age, a church and a museum. Walking there along paths draws a long line out of the city.
Cold and dark winters
Uppsala is flat, apart from the castle ridge. Winters are cold and dark, with snow.
Summers have long days, perfect for walking late into the evening. A good loop runs from the cathedral up to the castle and the Botanical Garden, down to the Fyris, along the river through the centre and back past the Linnaeus Garden.
The character who walks with you
