Walk Valparaiso up its hills
Valparaiso tumbles down dozens of hills to a busy port, its houses painted every colour and its walls covered in murals. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the stairs and alleys make a wonderfully tangled map.
The hills
Valparaiso is a port city built on dozens of hills, the cerros, rising above a narrow strip of flat land along the bay. Its historic quarter is a World Heritage site. Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion are the most visited, with colourful houses, cafes and murals everywhere.
Old funiculars, the ascensores, climb some of the hills, but the stairways and winding alleys are the real way to explore.
The port and beyond
Down in the flat El Plan, the port, the Plaza Sotomayor and the old commercial streets sit by the sea. La Sebastiana, Pablo Neruda's house, stands on Cerro Bellavista, with a view over the bay.
A good day: El Plan, up a funicular, across Cerro Concepcion and Cerro Alegre, down by stairs, and over to Cerro Bellavista and its open air museum of murals.
Coverage
The hills are steep and the streets twist, so the map fills as a dense, chaotic web. Each hill is a separate project.
The climate is mild, often foggy in the morning. Use care in quieter areas after dark.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Valparaiso clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
