Walk Albuquerque under the Sandias
Albuquerque is a broad desert city with an old plaza, a stretch of Route 66 and a cottonwood forest along the Rio Grande. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the river trail draws a long bright line beside the water.
Old Town and Central Avenue
Old Town is the original Spanish settlement, a plaza with the San Felipe de Neri church on its north side and adobe buildings full of shops around it. Its lanes and courtyards are small and pleasant to explore slowly.
Central Avenue, the old Route 66, runs east from Old Town through downtown to the University of New Mexico and Nob Hill, where neon signs and mid century buildings line the street. It is a long straight walk of several miles.
The river and the mountains
The Paseo del Bosque Trail follows the Rio Grande for around 16 miles through the bosque, the cottonwood forest along the river. It is flat, shaded and quiet, and it draws a strong north to south line on the map.
East of the city, the Sandia Mountains rise sharply, turning pink at sunset, which is where the name comes from. The foothills have trails for real hikes. West, Petroglyph National Monument protects thousands of rock carvings.
Altitude and sun
The city sits at about 5,000 feet, and the sun is strong. Carry water and a hat, and in summer walk in the morning. Spring is windy, autumn is lovely, and the balloon fiesta in October fills the sky.
Albuquerque spreads widely, so expect the percentage to grow slowly. Old Town, Nob Hill and the bosque are the places to start.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 400 feet around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
