Walk Santa Fe from the Plaza to Canyon Road

Santa Fe is small, old and high, with adobe lanes radiating from a plaza that has been the centre of town for four centuries. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the whole historic core fits in a few days.

A plaza and its lanes

The Plaza has been the heart of Santa Fe since the early seventeenth century. The Palace of the Governors lines its north side, with artists selling jewellery under the portal. A block east is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis, and nearby the Loretto Chapel with its spiral staircase and the San Miguel Chapel.

Streets around the centre are narrow and irregular, lined with adobe and pueblo style buildings, and they change direction often. That makes them good fog walking: there is always another lane.

Galleries, rails and the river

Canyon Road climbs east from the centre lined with galleries, studios and sculpture gardens, a long uphill stroll. The Railyard district, south west of the Plaza, has a farmers market, galleries and a park. The Santa Fe River Trail follows the small river through town.

A good loop: Plaza, Cathedral, Loretto, San Miguel, up Canyon Road, back down along the river trail, then to the Railyard. Museum Hill is a short walk or bus ride south east.

Altitude

The city sits at around 7,000 feet, and visitors feel it on the first days. Walk slowly, drink water and expect to be more tired than the distance suggests. The sun is strong all year.

The historic core is compact, so a few days of walking will clear a striking amount of it. Beyond the core the town spreads into low houses and hills.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Santa Fe clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
