Walk Amman over its hills
Amman is built across a series of steep hills, with a Roman theatre downtown and staircases linking the neighbourhoods above. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the stairs give you routes cars cannot take.
Downtown
Downtown Amman, Al-Balad, lies in the valley, with souks, the King Hussein Mosque and the Roman Theatre carved into a hillside. The streets are busy, noisy and full of food: falafel, knafeh and fresh juice.
Above it, the Citadel occupies the top of Jabal al-Qal'a, with the ruins of the Temple of Hercules, an Umayyad palace and a view across the whole city.
Stairs and hills
Long public staircases climb from downtown to the neighbourhoods on the hills. Jabal Amman, reached by them, has Rainbow Street, with cafes and old villas. Jabal al-Weibdeh has art galleries and quiet lanes.
A day: the Roman Theatre, the souks, up to the Citadel, down and up the stairs to Rainbow Street, then to Weibdeh. The King Abdullah I Mosque, with its blue dome, is in Abdali.
Coverage
Amman is very hilly, so walking is hard work, but the stairs and hillside streets fill the map in dense, tangled patches.
