Walk Anchorage along Cook Inlet
Anchorage sits between the Chugach Mountains and the tidal flats of Cook Inlet, with a coastal trail running out of downtown. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and summer evenings that never end give you all the time you need.
A small downtown grid
Downtown Anchorage is a compact grid of numbered avenues and lettered streets on a bluff above the inlet. The Fourth Avenue area holds shops, the visitor log cabin and the Anchorage Museum a few blocks east. Ship Creek, at the north edge, has salmon runs in summer that you can watch from the bank.
The Chugach Mountains fill the eastern horizon, and on clear days Denali can be seen far to the north.
The Coastal Trail
The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail runs about 11 miles from downtown along the shore of Cook Inlet, past Westchester Lagoon and Earthquake Park, where the ground slumped in the great 1964 earthquake, to Kincaid Park. Moose are common along it.
Walk it out as far as you like and come back through the neighbourhoods. The Chester Creek Trail connects to it at Westchester Lagoon and heads inland. Never walk out onto the tidal mudflats, which are dangerous.
Light and season
In midsummer the sun barely sets and you can walk at midnight in daylight. In winter the days are very short and the trails are used for skiing, so plan around ice and darkness.
The downtown grid fills quickly; beyond it the city spreads across a large bowl, so the Coastal Trail will be your longest and brightest line.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Anchorage clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
