Ruins under three volcanoes

Walk Antigua Guatemala

Antigua is a colonial town of cobbled streets and ruined churches, surrounded by volcanoes. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the small grid can be cleared almost entirely.

A grid of ruins

Antigua was the colonial capital until earthquakes in the eighteenth century led to its abandonment. Many churches and convents were left as ruins, and they stand among restored houses along a regular grid of cobbled streets. The town is a World Heritage site.

The Parque Central, with its fountain and the cathedral, is at the centre. The Santa Catalina Arch, painted yellow, frames the Agua volcano at the end of its street.

Churches and a hill

La Merced, with its ornate yellow facade, and the ruins of churches such as San Francisco and the Capuchinas convent are within a few blocks. The Cerro de la Cruz, a hill north of town, has a path to a cross with a view over the town and the volcano.

The town is small, so walking every street of the grid is realistic. Holy Week brings processions over carpets of coloured sawdust.

Coverage

Antigua is compact and mostly flat, and the cobbles are uneven. The grid makes a neat square on the map.

The town is at about 1,500 metres, with a mild climate. The rainy season runs from May to October.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Antigua Guatemala clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
