Walk Baltimore around the harbour
Baltimore is a city of rowhouse neighbourhoods wrapped around a working harbour. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the waterfront promenade draws one long bright edge you can build on.
Neighbourhoods around the water
The Inner Harbor is the centre, a basin ringed by a brick promenade. To the east are Harbor East and Fells Point, the old maritime quarter with cobbled Thames Street and the Broadway market square, then Canton with its converted canneries. To the south, Federal Hill rises over the harbour with the best view of the skyline.
North of downtown, Mount Vernon is built around the first major monument to George Washington, with squares of townhouses and the Walters Art Museum. Further out are miles of rowhouse blocks, each with marble steps, laid out on a mostly regular grid.
A harbour loop
The Waterfront Promenade runs for several miles from Canton around the Inner Harbor toward Locust Point. Walk it from Canton west through Fells Point and Harbor East to the Inner Harbor, climb Federal Hill, then continue around to Fort McHenry if you have the time.
On another day, walk north up Charles Street from the harbour to Mount Vernon, across to the Lexington Market, and back down through the west side. Patterson Park, east of Fells Point, is good for loops and has a pagoda on its hill.
Reading the map
Rowhouse blocks are dense and regular, so the fog lifts in tidy rectangles, and the alleys behind the houses add a second layer of fine lines. The harbour itself stays dark, which makes the promenade stand out.
Baltimore is moderately hilly away from the water. Summers are humid, winters mild enough to walk. As with any city, use judgement about where and when you walk, and stick to busy streets after dark.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Baltimore, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose miles in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
