FOG
Old town, grid and a long seafront

Walk Bari from the old town to the seafront

Bari is a port city on the Adriatic with a tangled medieval old town on a peninsula and a tidy nineteenth century grid beside it. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the two halves draw completely different patterns.

Bari Vecchia

The old town occupies a small peninsula, a maze of narrow lanes, arches and courtyards. The Basilica di San Nicola, which holds the relics of Saint Nicholas, is a major pilgrimage site, and the Cathedral of San Sabino is a short walk away.

On Strada Arco Basso and the lanes nearby, women make orecchiette pasta at tables outside their doors. On the edge of the old town, the Norman-Swabian castle stands behind its moat.

The Murat and the sea

South of the old town, the Murat quarter is a grid of straight streets with shops, including Via Sparano, the main shopping street, and Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which marks the boundary between old and new. The Teatro Petruzzelli and the Teatro Margherita, on the water, are landmarks.

The lungomare runs along the coast for kilometres, a seafront promenade that is good for long, straight lines on the map. Walking the old town, then the grid, then back along the water makes a complete loop.

Flat and warm

Bari is flat and easy to walk. Summers are hot, with a sea breeze along the lungomare.

The old town lanes are confusing at first, and that is what makes them good to clear.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Bari clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
