Baroque carved in soft golden stone

Walk baroque Lecce

Lecce, in the heel of Italy, is covered in baroque carving cut from a soft local limestone that glows honey coloured in the sun. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the compact old town fills in a single long day.

The baroque centre

The Piazza Sant'Oronzo is the main square, with part of a Roman amphitheatre excavated below street level. A short walk north, the Basilica di Santa Croce has one of the most elaborate baroque facades in Italy, crowded with carved figures and animals.

To the west, the Piazza del Duomo is an enclosed square entered from one side, with the cathedral, its tall bell tower and the bishop's palace. The streets between are lined with palazzi and churches in the same pale stone.

Gates and edges

Three old gates mark the edge of the historic centre: Porta Napoli, Porta Rudiae and Porta San Biagio. Walking from one to the next traces the outline of the old town, and the lanes between them fill in the middle.

The Castle of Charles V stands on the eastern side, and the Villa Comunale, the public gardens, is just north of it. Lecce is also known for its papier-mache craft, displayed in shops around the centre.

Hot and flat

Lecce is flat, and the old town is small and walkable. Summers are very hot, and the white stone reflects the heat.

Walk in the morning or evening, when the facades are at their most golden and the streets come alive.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Lecce clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
