FOG
More canals than you would think

Walk Birmingham along the canals

Birmingham is England's second city, a place of canals, Victorian squares and new towers. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the canal towpaths draw long lines through the middle.

The centre

Victoria Square, with the Council House and the Town Hall, a Roman temple style building, is the civic centre. Next to it, Chamberlain Square and Centenary Square lead to the Library of Birmingham, a building wrapped in metal rings.

New Street and the Bullring, with the Selfridges building covered in metal discs and St Martin's Church, are the shopping heart.

Canals

Birmingham has a large network of canals, and their towpaths are open to walk. Gas Street Basin and Brindleyplace, just west of the centre, are the busiest stretches, with narrowboats and canalside bars.

The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal runs north past the Jewellery Quarter, a district of old workshops, many still in the jewellery trade, and the Pen Museum. The towpaths are flat and make good long walks out from the centre.

Districts

Digbeth, south of the centre, is an old industrial area with street art and music venues. The Custard Factory is its hub.

Birmingham is big, but the centre is compact. The weather is grey and mild for much of the year.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Birmingham, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
