The old town

Shakespeare's Birthplace, a timber framed house, stands on Henley Street. Nearby, on Chapel Street, New Place is the site of the house where he lived later. Holy Trinity Church, by the river, is where he is buried.

The river

The River Avon flows past the town, with the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on its bank. The Bancroft Gardens, beside the canal basin, are the main green space, with narrowboats moored in the basin.

A footbridge and the old Clopton Bridge cross the river to the recreation ground. A riverside walk runs south toward the church. Anne Hathaway's Cottage is in Shottery, a short walk west across fields.

A day

Stratford is small and flat, and a day clears most of the town. Summer is busy with visitors.

The Stratford-upon-Avon Canal starts at the basin and has a towpath north for longer walks.
