Walk Bath in honey coloured stone

Bath is a small city built almost entirely of the same golden stone, with Roman baths at its centre and Georgian crescents climbing the hills. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the whole centre fits in a long day.

The centre

Bath grew around the hot springs that the Romans turned into a bathing complex, still standing beside Bath Abbey in the middle of town. The streets around them are full of Georgian buildings in Bath stone, a warm honey colour that gives the city its look.

Pulteney Bridge, lined with shops on both sides, crosses the River Avon beside a curved weir. Milsom Street and the lanes around it are the shopping centre.

Crescents and the hills

Walk uphill from the centre to the Circus, a perfect ring of townhouses, and on to the Royal Crescent, a huge curved terrace facing a park. The Assembly Rooms are nearby. The streets keep climbing to Lansdown and other hillside terraces.

For a longer walk, follow the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath east out of the city, or take the Bath Skyline walk, a circular route of around ten kilometres over the hills above the city with fine views.

Small and steep

Bath is compact, so the centre can be covered thoroughly in a couple of days, and the map shows a dense, bright core. The hills are steep in places.

The weather is mild. The city is busy with visitors, and the early morning is the quietest time to walk the main sights.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Bath clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
