FOG
Harbourside, hills and a gorge

Walk Bristol from the harbour to the gorge

Bristol is a hilly port city of coloured terraces, a working harbour and a famous bridge over a gorge. FOG starts the map hidden and clears only what you walk, and the city packs a lot of streets into its slopes.

The harbour

The Floating Harbour runs through the centre of Bristol, lined with old warehouses, museums and boats. Walk along both quays past the SS Great Britain, Brunel's iron steamship in its dry dock, and the M Shed museum. Small ferries cross the water.

Above the harbour, the old city has St Nicholas Market, King Street with its old pubs, and the Christmas Steps, a steep stepped lane of small shops.

Up to Clifton

Park Street climbs steeply from the centre toward the university's Wills Memorial Building. Brandon Hill, beside it, has Cabot Tower with a view across the city. Beyond is Clifton, with Georgian crescents and Clifton Village.

At the edge of Clifton, the Clifton Suspension Bridge crosses the Avon Gorge high above the river. Walk across and back, and look down to the river and the Portway. Colourful terraces climb the hills at Cliftonwood and Totterdown, and Stokes Croft is known for street art.

Hills and coverage

Bristol is steep in places, and the routes up from the harbour are the hardest part of any walk. The weather is mild and often wet.

The centre and Clifton fill as a dense, tangled patch. The gorge shows as a dark gap crossed by one bright line, which is a nice detail to have on the map.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Bristol walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
