FOG
River greenbelt, foothill trails

Walk Boise along the river and into the foothills

Boise has a river path through the middle of town and trails climbing straight out of its neighbourhoods into the foothills. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and both show up as long, satisfying lines.

Town and river

Downtown Boise is compact, centred on the Idaho State Capitol and the Grove Plaza. The Basque Block, a short street of Basque restaurants, a museum and a fronton, recalls one of the largest Basque communities outside Spain.

The Boise River Greenbelt runs along the river for around 25 miles, through parks, past the university and out toward the suburbs. It is the best way to cover a lot of ground without a car.

Up into the foothills

The North End and Hyde Park, north of downtown, are tree lined neighbourhoods of old houses, with Harrison Boulevard as a grand avenue. From the top of the North End the Ridge to Rivers trail system heads straight up into the open foothills.

Table Rock, east of town, is a popular climb with a view over the whole valley. A good day: the Capitol and Basque Block, along the Greenbelt to Julia Davis Park, then up through the North End to the foothill trails.

Climate

Boise is high desert at around 2,700 feet. Summers are hot and dry, winters cold with some snow. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for long walks.

The central city is small and the Greenbelt is long, so the map grows a dense heart and two long arms along the river, with foothill trails branching off to the north.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Boise walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
