Churches, gardens and a great stairway

Walk Braga and climb to Bom Jesus

Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, with a historic centre packed with churches and a famous baroque stairway on a hill just outside town. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the walk to the sanctuary draws a long line east.

The historic centre

The Se, the cathedral, is the oldest in Portugal and stands at the heart of the old town. Around it, the Rua do Souto runs as the main pedestrian street, and the Jardim de Santa Barbara is a flower garden beside the old archbishop's palace.

The Arco da Porta Nova is a gate at the western edge of the old town. To the east, the Praca da Republica and the long Avenida Central form the modern centre, with the Theatro Circo nearby. The Palacio do Raio, with its blue tiled facade, is a short walk away.

Up to Bom Jesus

The sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte stands on a hill a few kilometres east of the centre, reached by a zigzag baroque stairway with chapels and fountains. A water-powered funicular climbs beside it, one of the oldest in the world still running.

Walking out from the centre to the base of the stairs and then up them is a real climb, but it draws a long new line across the map. Above Bom Jesus, the Sameiro sanctuary sits higher still.

Rain and hills

Braga gets a lot of rain, especially in winter. The centre is gently sloped, but the climb to Bom Jesus is steep.

The old town is compact and fills quickly; the outer districts take longer.

How FOG keeps score here

FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 120 metres around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.

There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
