Walk Santiago de Compostela in the rain
Santiago de Compostela is where the Camino ends, a granite old town grown around a vast cathedral, its stone streets shining in the frequent rain. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and you can finish your own pilgrimage street by street.
Around the cathedral
The cathedral is surrounded by squares on every side. The Praza do Obradoiro faces its great baroque facade, and pilgrims arrive there at the end of the Camino. The Praza da Quintana, the Praza das Praterias and the Praza da Inmaculada complete the circuit.
Next to the cathedral, the monastery of San Martino Pinario is one of the largest buildings in the old town. The Hostal dos Reis Catolicos, a former pilgrim hospital, closes one side of the Obradoiro.
The old streets
Three main streets run south from the cathedral: the Rua do Franco, the Rua do Vilar and the Rua Nova, with arcades along much of their length and narrow lanes linking them. The Mercado de Abastos, the food market, is a short walk east.
West of the old town, the Alameda park has a promenade with views back over the cathedral towers. East, the Parque de Bonaval sits on a slope beside an old convent. A loop through both parks and back through the three streets covers the whole core.
Granite and rain
Santiago is one of the wettest cities in Spain, and the granite paving gets slick. Arcades help, but bring a waterproof.
The old town is compact and gently hilly, and fills in a day.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Santiago de Compostela clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
