FOG
Castle, cathedral and a curious clock

Walk Brno between two hills

Brno is the second city of the Czech Republic, an old town between the castle hill of Spilberk and the cathedral hill of Petrov. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the two hills frame a dense centre to clear.

Squares and underground

Namesti Svobody is the main square, home to a black stone astronomical clock shaped somewhat like a bullet, which drops a glass marble every day at eleven. The Zelny trh, the cabbage market, is a sloping square with daily stalls and a baroque fountain.

Beneath the Zelny trh, a labyrinth of old cellars can be visited. The Old Town Hall has a crooked pinnacle above its doorway and a stuffed crocodile, called the dragon, hanging in the passage.

Two hills

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul stands on the Petrov hill, its twin spires a city landmark. Across the old town, Spilberk Castle sits on a wooded hill with a park all around and casemates inside.

The Capuchin crypt holds mummified monks. Outside the centre, Villa Tugendhat is a modernist house by Mies van der Rohe and a World Heritage site, and Luzanky is the oldest public park in the city.

Easy walking

The old town is compact, with moderate climbs to Spilberk and Petrov. Cobbles are common.

Winters are cold, summers warm. Students keep the city lively.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Brno walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
