Walk Burlington down to the lake
Burlington, Vermont, slopes from a hilltop university down to Lake Champlain, with a pedestrian street in between and a lakeside path along the shore. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the town is small enough to finish.
Hill to lake
The University of Vermont sits on the hill at the east side of town, with a green and old brick halls. From there the streets run straight downhill to the lake. Church Street Marketplace, the pedestrian street of shops and restaurants, runs four blocks through the middle of downtown.
At the bottom is the Waterfront Park, with a boardwalk and views across Lake Champlain to the Adirondack mountains in New York. Sunsets over the lake draw a crowd.
The lakeside path
The Burlington Greenway runs along the shore for about eight miles, north through parks and beaches toward the Winooski River and out onto the Colchester Causeway, an old rail embankment that runs out into the lake.
A good loop: down from the university to Church Street, to the waterfront, north along the greenway to North Beach, and back up through the Old North End, the older working neighbourhood.
Winter
Winters are long and cold, with snow on the ground from December into March, and the lake wind is sharp. Summer and early autumn are the best time, and the autumn colour is famous.
Burlington is the biggest city in Vermont, but it is small, and a few walks clear most of the centre.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Burlington clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
