Walk Portland, Maine
Portland, Maine is a small port city on a peninsula, with cobbled streets by the harbour and a promenade at each end. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the whole peninsula can be cleared in a few days.
The Old Port
The Old Port is the brick and cobblestone district by the harbour, rebuilt after a fire in 1866, with shops, restaurants and working wharves. Commercial Street runs along the waterfront, and Exchange Street and Fore Street climb up from it.
Congress Street, the main street, runs the length of the peninsula along its spine, past Monument Square and the Arts District.
The promenades
At the east end, Munjoy Hill rises to the Portland Observatory, an old signal tower, and the Eastern Promenade, a park on a slope above Casco Bay with a waterside trail at the bottom. At the west end, the Western Promenade looks across the Fore River, lined with big Victorian houses.
Walking from one promenade to the other, along Congress Street one way and through the West End and Old Port the other, clears the spine of the city.
Practical notes
The peninsula is about three miles long, hilly at each end, and dense. Summer and early autumn are the best seasons, winters are cold and snowy.
Ferries to the islands of Casco Bay leave from the Old Port, if you want to add an island to the map. Fort Williams Park and the Portland Head Light are a few miles south in Cape Elizabeth.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Portland, Maine, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose miles in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
