Walk Cadiz around its sea walls
Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, packed onto the end of a narrow strip of land with the Atlantic on three sides. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the sea walls give you a clean loop around the whole old town.
The old town
The old town is a dense grid of narrow streets and tall, pale houses with watchtowers on their roofs. The Torre Tavira is the highest of these and has a camera obscura that projects the city onto a table.
The cathedral faces the sea on the southern side, with its golden dome. Nearby, the Barrio del Populo is the oldest quarter, entered through medieval arches, and the Mercado Central is the busy market. The Barrio de la Vina in the west is the fishermen's district, the heart of the carnival.
Around the edge
Seawalls and promenades run almost all the way around the old town. On the west, La Caleta is a small beach between two forts: the Castillo de Santa Catalina and the Castillo de San Sebastian, which sits on an island reached by a long causeway.
Walking north from La Caleta, the Parque Genoves and the Alameda Apodaca follow the water toward the port. Beyond the old town, the long Playa de la Victoria runs down the narrow strip of land toward the mainland.
Wind and sun
Cadiz is flat and small, so the old town fills quickly. The levante, a strong east wind, can make walking along the walls tough on some days.
Summers are hot but tempered by the sea, and winters are mild.
What the app adds to a walk
The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.
Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Cadiz walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
