Walk Cambridge along the Backs
Cambridge is flat, small and laced with paths along the river behind the colleges. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the centre is compact enough to clear in a weekend.
Colleges and market
The centre of Cambridge is a tight cluster around the Market Square. King's Parade, Trinity Street and St John's Street run in a line past King's College Chapel, Trinity and St John's. Narrow passages lead off them between the colleges.
The Backs is the stretch of lawns and gardens behind the colleges along the River Cam, crossed by a series of bridges, and the view of King's College Chapel from them is the classic image of the city.
Commons and meadows
Cambridge has open commons right in town: Jesus Green, Midsummer Common and Parker's Piece. Walk along the river through them and watch the punts and rowers.
South of the city, a path follows the river through Grantchester Meadows to the village of Grantchester, a walk of around three kilometres each way through open fields. Mill Road, east of the centre, is a lively street with a very different character from the colleges.
Flat and quick
Cambridge is completely flat, with many cyclists, so watch the cycle lanes. The centre fills quickly and the percentage of the city rises faster than in most places.
The weather is drier than most of England, which makes year round walking easier.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Cambridge is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
