Walk Chattanooga across the Walnut Street Bridge
Chattanooga sits on a bend of the Tennessee River below Lookout Mountain, and its walking bridge is one of the longest in the world. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the riverfront and bridges make a loop that lights up both banks.
The bridge and the river
The Walnut Street Bridge, built in 1891, is a steel truss bridge of about half a mile, now for pedestrians only. It links downtown to the North Shore, a neighbourhood of shops and Coolidge Park, which has a carousel and a lawn by the water.
The Tennessee Riverwalk runs for miles along the south bank, from downtown out to the Chickamauga Dam. The Tennessee Aquarium and the Hunter Museum of American Art, on a bluff with a glass walkway, sit along it.
Downtown and the mountain
Downtown has the Chattanooga Choo Choo, the old railway terminal, and the Southside district around it, with restaurants and music. The Bluff View Art District, beside the Hunter Museum, is a small cluster of galleries and gardens.
Lookout Mountain rises south of the city. The Incline Railway climbs it from the St. Elmo neighbourhood, and trails go up for those who want to walk.
A loop
Cross the Walnut Street Bridge to the North Shore, walk along Coolidge Park, return by the Market Street Bridge, and continue along the Riverwalk past the aquarium to the Bluff View district.
Summers are hot and humid. Autumn, with the colours on the ridges, is the best season.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 400 feet around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
