FOG
Market Square and the Sunsphere

Walk Knoxville from Market Square

Knoxville is a Tennessee river city with a compact old downtown, a university and the Great Smoky Mountains on the horizon. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, and the centre fills in quickly.

Downtown

Market Square is a pedestrian square surrounded by old brick buildings, restaurants and a farmers market in the warmer months. Gay Street, the main street, runs north to south past the Tennessee Theatre, a restored movie palace from 1928.

The Old City, at the north end of downtown, is a district of warehouses converted to bars and restaurants.

The fair site and the river

World's Fair Park, west of downtown, was the site of the 1982 World's Fair. The Sunsphere, a gold glass ball on a steel tower, still stands, with an observation deck. The park has lawns, a stream and a small amphitheatre.

The University of Tennessee campus lies beyond it, along the Tennessee River. The riverfront has paths, and the Gay Street Bridge crosses to the south bank, where the Urban Wilderness has miles of trails through woods and old quarries.

Seasons

Summers are hot and humid. Spring, with dogwoods in flower, and autumn are the best seasons.

Downtown is small and dense. The Urban Wilderness on the south bank makes a big addition for longer walks.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Knoxville walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
