Walk Asheville in the Blue Ridge
Asheville is a mountain town with a downtown full of art deco buildings and hills in every direction. FOG keeps the map hidden until you walk it, and the compact centre is easy to light up in a day or two.
A downtown on a ridge
Downtown Asheville sits on a ridge at a little over 2,000 feet, with mountains on every horizon. Its centrepiece is a run of 1920s buildings: the art deco City Hall with its tiled roof, the Grove Arcade, and the old storefronts around Pack Square and Pritchard Park.
The streets are short and sloped, and the downtown core is small, roughly half a mile across, so a single long walk covers a large share of it.
Down to the river and beyond
West of downtown, the River Arts District runs along the French Broad River in old industrial buildings full of studios. The area was badly hit by floods from Hurricane Helene in 2024 and has been rebuilding since, so check what is open before you plan a walk there.
Across the river, West Asheville has a lively main street along Haywood Road. To the south, Biltmore Village sits at the gate of the Biltmore Estate. Montford, just north of downtown, has large old houses on quiet streets.
Hills and seasons
Almost every walk involves climbing. Autumn colour in October is spectacular, spring is mild, summer pleasant thanks to the altitude, and winter can bring snow.
The town is small, so a week of walking makes a real dent in the percentage, and the winding hill streets light up in curly, uneven lines.
How FOG keeps score here
FOG starts with the whole world under fog. Every place you physically walk clears a circle of roughly 400 feet around you, and that ground stays clear for good. It keeps working with the app closed and the screen off once you allow background location, so the walk to dinner counts as much as the planned loop.
There is no account, no sign-up and no cloud. The trail lives on your phone and nowhere else, and you can export a GPX backup whenever you like. Exploring is free; one purchase of FOG Unlimited adds the higher ranks, all five character paths and history import, with no subscription.
