FOG
A long beach and old temples

Walk Chennai from Marina Beach to Mylapore

Chennai has one of the longest urban beaches in the world, a colonial fort and old temple neighbourhoods. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, and the beach draws a long line along the coast.

The beach

Marina Beach runs for kilometres along the Bay of Bengal, a wide stretch of sand with a promenade behind it, busy with families in the evening. At its southern end, the Santhome Basilica is built over the tomb of St Thomas.

Further south, Besant Nagar has Elliot's Beach, quieter and popular for evening walks.

Temples and the fort

Mylapore, inland from the beach, is one of the oldest neighbourhoods, centred on the Kapaleeshwarar temple with its painted gopuram tower and a large tank. The streets around it are full of flower sellers and shops.

North, Fort St George was the first British fort in India, with a museum and an old church. George Town, beyond it, is a dense market district.

Coverage

Chennai is flat and spread out, with heavy traffic. The beach promenade is the easiest long walk.

It is hot and humid all year. Walk at dawn or in the evening, and avoid the monsoon floods in late autumn.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Chennai walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
