FOG
Complete Roman walls and the Rows

Walk the walls of Chester

Chester has the most complete city walls in Britain, a ring of about three kilometres that you can walk along the top of, and galleried medieval shopping streets inside. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the walls draw a clean circle.

The walls

Chester's walls were first built by the Romans and extended in the Middle Ages. You can walk the whole circuit along the top, about three kilometres, past the Eastgate Clock, one of the most photographed clocks in England, and the cathedral.

The Roman Amphitheatre, the largest found in Britain, lies just outside the walls on the southeast side, with the Roman Gardens beside it.

The Rows

The Rows are two levels of shops along the main streets, with covered galleries at first floor level above the street shops. They line Eastgate Street, Watergate Street, Northgate Street and Bridge Street, which meet at the Cross.

Chester Cathedral, of red sandstone, has a medieval cloister and a garden.

The river

The River Dee runs along the south side of the walls. The Groves, a riverside promenade, has boats for hire, and the Queen's Park suspension bridge crosses to the south bank. The racecourse, the Roodee, lies just outside the walls on the west.

Chester is compact, and a day covers the walls, the Rows and the river.

Background walking, private by design

FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Chester clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.

Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
