Walk Cordoba through the Juderia

Cordoba holds one of the great buildings of the world, the Mosque-Cathedral, inside a maze of white lanes and flower filled patios. FOG starts the map dark and clears only where you walk, and the old quarter rewards slow exploring.

The Mezquita and the lanes

The Mezquita-Catedral is a vast former mosque, its forest of striped arches enclosing a cathedral built in the middle. Around it, the Juderia, the old Jewish quarter, is a tangle of narrow white lanes, with a medieval synagogue and the Calleja de las Flores, a tiny lane hung with flower pots.

In May, Cordoba holds a festival of patios, when private courtyards full of flowers open to visitors.

The river

The Roman Bridge crosses the Guadalquivir from the Mezquita to the Calahorra Tower, with a view back at the city. Walk across and back, then follow the river to the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, a fortress with large gardens.

A good loop: the Mezquita, the Juderia, the Alcazar, the riverside, across the Roman Bridge, and back through the eastern quarters of the old town, which are quieter.

Heat

Cordoba is one of the hottest cities in Europe in summer, often well above 40 degrees in the afternoon. Walk early in the morning or late in the evening. Spring is the best season.

The old town is large and tangled, so it fills slowly, lane by lane.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Cordoba clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
