Walk Dresden on both banks of the Elbe
Dresden's baroque old town was rebuilt after the war and faces a wide green river valley. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the walk along the Elbe meadows is one of the finest in Germany.
The old town
The Altstadt is a compact cluster of baroque buildings: the Frauenkirche, rebuilt and reconsecrated in 2005, the Zwinger palace with its courtyard and pavilions, the Semperoper opera house and the royal palace. The Furstenzug, a long porcelain tile mural of Saxon rulers, covers a wall on Augustusstrasse.
Bruhl's Terrace, raised above the river, is called the balcony of Europe and runs along the old town's edge.
The river and the Neustadt
The Elbe is not hemmed in by quays here: wide green meadows line both banks, with long walking and cycling paths. Walk them for kilometres in either direction and you have one of the most scenic lines on the map.
Cross the Augustus Bridge to the Neustadt, past the Golden Rider statue. The outer Neustadt is a lively, alternative quarter, with the courtyards of the Kunsthofpassage decorated in surreal style. A loop: old town, Bruhl's Terrace, the bridge, the Neustadt, and back along the meadows.
Coverage
Dresden is flat by the river, and the old town is small enough to clear in a day. The meadows remain open ground with your paths along them.
Summers are warm, winters cold, with a famous Christmas market. Spring is a good season, with the meadows green.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Dresden, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
