Walk Durham around the peninsula
Durham is a small city on a tight loop of the River Wear, with a Norman cathedral and castle on the rock in the middle. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the riverbank path around the peninsula is one of the best short walks in England.
The peninsula
The River Wear loops almost all the way around a rocky peninsula, and Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle stand on top of it, together a World Heritage site. The cathedral, one of the great Norman buildings, holds the shrine of St Cuthbert.
The castle is part of Durham University, and students live in it. Palace Green, between the cathedral and the castle, is an open lawn.
The riverbanks
Paths run along both banks of the Wear around the peninsula, under trees, with views up to the cathedral. Prebends Bridge and Framwellgate Bridge cross at either end, and boats can be hired by Elvet Bridge.
The Market Place, at the neck of the peninsula, has the town hall and a statue of a horseman. Steep cobbled streets, such as Saddler Street, climb from it to Palace Green.
Coverage
Durham is small, and the walk around the peninsula is a few kilometres. The university colleges and the botanic garden are spread on the hills to the south.
The weather is cool, and autumn colours on the riverbanks are beautiful.
