Walk Newcastle along the Quayside
Newcastle upon Tyne is a city of bridges, with seven of them crossing the river within a short stretch and a grand Georgian centre on the hill above. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and a loop of the bridges lights up both banks.
Grainger Town
The centre of Newcastle, Grainger Town, was rebuilt in the 1830s in stone, with Grey Street curving downhill from Grey's Monument, a tall column at the top. The Grainger Market, an indoor market of the same period, sits nearby.
The castle keep and the Black Gate, the medieval remains that gave the city its name, stand above the river by the railway viaduct, and the cathedral is next to them.
The Quayside and the bridges
The Quayside runs along the north bank of the Tyne, with a Sunday market. The Tyne Bridge, the Swing Bridge and the High Level Bridge cross close together, and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a tilting footbridge, links the Quayside to the Baltic arts centre and the Glasshouse music venue on the Gateshead side.
A loop over the Millennium Bridge, along the Gateshead bank and back over the High Level or Tyne Bridge is a few kilometres and clears both banks.
Further out
Ouseburn, east of the Quayside, is a valley of old industrial buildings turned into pubs and workshops. Jesmond Dene, north of the centre, is a wooded valley park.
The centre is hilly, with steep streets and steps from the Quayside up to the town. The weather is cool and windy.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Newcastle is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
